The Object of this Fraternity shall be for the development of the best and truest fraternal spirit; the mutual welfare and brotherhood of musical students; the advancement of music in America and a loyalty to the Alma Mater.

"The scope of our mission is national, and before many years have passed the Sinfonia Fraternity will be known and its influence felt from ocean to ocean and from lake to gulf."

-Ossian Everett Mills, founder and first supreme president

Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia now boasts the title of the largest music fraternity in the world.  There are more than 150,000 initiates to the fraternity, and there are chapters in over 200 college and university campuses across the United States.

Ossian Everett Mills, the former bursar of the New England Conservatory in Boston, founded Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia on October 6, 1898.  The fifteenth chapter of the social fraternity, the Lambda Xi chapter at the University of Mississippi was founded on March 31, 1962 and was re-chartered on May 4, 2002.

Membership into Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia only requires that you have deep love of music.  Members can be found in majors across campus from chemistry, political science, and everything in between.

Simply put, we are a group of men that loves music.  This does not mean we are the best musicians, but we feel music can be used to change the world. We do our best to fulfill the object of our fraternity.  We do this by fundraising for many different causes, performing in hospitals and nursing home, and trying our best to advance music in America.
